South Street not at Her Majestys Theatre in 2018
The Royal South Street Society Eisteddfod will be a little different this year. After receiving a substantial grant, renovations will be undertaken on Her Majesty’s theatre; the main venue for the annual South Street Competitions. Alternative venues will be need to be organised for several competition sections, including calisthenics.
An article in The Courier quoted City of Ballarat development and planning director Angelique Lush as saying that the 144 year old theatre is undergoing
“deterioration prevention works, fire safety upgrades, a stormwater system upgrade… internal plaster and paint conservation works… waterproofing, drainage, and structural repairs”
South Street’s CEO Brett Macdonald said that the competition fully support the undertaking of the theatre works.
The calisthenics community seems divided over whether the prestige is in the competition itself, or the theatre.
